Summary
The International Luge Regulations for Artificial Track (IRO) include the regulations for an orderly staging of all competitions of the sport of luge on artificial tracks including championships and international competitions of the FIL. It is also valid for the luge competitions during Olympic Winter Games (OWG). Here you will find a summary of some of the most important IRO regulations.
Disciplines and competitions
There are various disciplines in artificial track luge, including singles (women's and men's), doubles (women's and men's), team relay and mixed event. Singles and doubles competitions are held in several runs, with the total time across all runs determining the ranking. At World Championships and Olympic Games, there are special rules for qualification and procedures.
Conditions of participation
Participation in international competitions requires a valid FIL E-license. Athletes must comply with age categories such as the general class, juniors, youth A and youth B. These are defined in the IRO.
Safety and fair play
The safety of the athletes has the highest priority. Organizers must ensure that medical services are on site and that the track is operated under safe conditions.
The IRO's clear rules ensure fair competition. Violations of the rules, such as leaving the sled before the finish line or unsportsmanlike behavior, can lead to disqualification.
Equipment
The regulations define detailed requirements for the sled. A sled consists of two runners, two steels, a seat mat or seat shell and two bridges, whereby the steering process is made possible by these components. The dimensions of the seat shell, runners and bridges are precisely defined, and the weight of the sled varies depending on the age group and discipline.
The athletes wear tight-fitting race suits and shoes that minimize air resistance, as well as protective helmets and gloves with small spikes that are required for the start.
The track
An artificial luge track is built specifically for the sport and must be approved and homologated by the FIL. These tracks can be equipped with or without a cooling system. There are also combined tracks for bobsleigh and luge, as well as shortened tracks. Safety precautions and compliance with certain slope and speed limits are essential to approve the track for competition.
