Whistler (pps) Despite several crashes, all without lasting consequences, the artificial track for luge, bob and skeleton in Whistler passed its first endurance test for the Olympic Winter Games 2010 in Vancouver with the training week of the International Luge Federation (FIL). The first training measure at the Whistler Sliding Centre was accompanied by extensive FIL safety precautions. For instance, a systematic training was compulsory for all participants.

„Very quick and very selective“, thus was the description of the impressive track by Thomas Schwab, Germany’s long-term head coach. „The upper speed limit is exceeded, however“, said Schwab, who was on the spot in his new function as sport director of the German Federation (BSD).

An unbelievable speed of 148.83 km/h was registered with Daniel Pfister from Austria, for instance. This would be significantly faster than the maximum speed calculated by the constructors of the track (approx. 136 km/h). With respect to the Olympic Winter Games, February 12 – 28, 2010, Schwab demands best possible preparation of the ice. Schwab: „I personally think the track is great, however, it has to be perfectly prepared.“ Schwab gave special thanks to the organizers with chief of the track Craig Lehto, coordinator luge Mark Hatton and race director Ed Moffat at the top: „This was excellent – quality as usual in Canada.“

The Whistler Sliding Centre is located at the bottom of Blackcomb Mountain and is one of today 15 artificial tracks worldwide, and 2010 setting of the Olympic decisions in luge, bob and skeleton. The track has 16 curves and a length of 1.450 metres; integrated are cooling houses, all facilities necessary for the operation of the track, and access roads.

The entire facility is part of a long-term development plan for the region, in particular for the post-Olympic utilisation. The Whistler Sliding Centre is conducted under the roof of the „Whistler Legacy Society“, a foundation set up by the Canadian government as well as the government of the province of British Columbia.
