The FIL family mourns the loss of Vladimir Kumaritashvili
Bakuriani/Georgia (FIL/09.10.2024) It is with great sadness that the FIL family learned today of the tragic loss of Vladimir Kumaritashvili.
The president and coach of the Georgian national luge team passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on October 8, 2024, after a short, serious illness. Vladimir Kumaritashvili, a native of Bakuriani, continued the proud tradition of his family, which has been rooted in the sport of luge for three generations.
As the son of Felix Kumaritashvili, a major pioneer of Georgian luge, Vladimir carried on his family's legacy with great dedication and passion. His work as a coach and official not only shaped Georgian luge, but also left an international mark. His devotion and tireless commitment to the sport will be sorely missed in the FIL family and far beyond.
Vladimir Kumaritashvili was also the father of Saba Kumaritashvili, a promising member of the Georgian national luge team. In his role as coach and father, he guided his son and the entire team with dedication and experience. His warmth, optimism and exceptional skills made him a highly valued member of the luge world.
In an initial reaction, FIL President Einars Fogelis said: “We are all deeply shocked. May this wonderful, young and so positive man rest in peace. We will always honor his memory.”
With the death of Vladimir Kumaritashvili, the FIL family has lost a great man, a friend, a dedicated coach and an outstanding sports official. Our condolences go out to his family, his friends and all those close to him. His achievements in the sport of luge will not be forgotten and his memory will be honored by the FIL family forever.
