Zwickau (pps) At the spring meeting of the Executive Board of the International Luge Federation (FIL), a memorial was unveiled for the deceased chairman of the sport commission Karl Zenker. FIL President Josef Fendt ceremoniously unveiled the wrought-iron memorial on the occasion of the Summer Cup in Zwickau, a luge competition with a long tradition. During the festive ceremony, Zenker’s favorite melody, the prisoners’ chorus from Giuseppe Verdis’ opera “Nabucco“, was played on an accordion.
Karl Zenker died on July 7, 2007, after a long illness. He was very committed to the sport of luge on a national and international basis and the main initiator of the first plastic luge track worldwide, which was inaugurated in Zwickau in 1979. As long-time President of the Luge and Bobsled Federation of the German federal state of Saxony, Executive Board member and chairman of the FIL Sport Commission, he significantly formed today’s international competition system and was one of the most important sport ambassadors of the city of Zwickau.
