Paris 2024 Summit - Sport for Sustainable Development

Paris (FIL/26 Jul. 2024) The day before the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the first Summit on Sport for Sustainable Development (#Sport4SD) took place, the largest meeting ever organized on this topic. On this occasion, France and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) wanted to launch an unprecedented movement to accelerate the contribution of sport to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron and IOC President Thomas Bach, the summit brought together 500 participants - heads of state and government, heads of international organizations and public banks, members of the Olympic Movement and socially engaged athletes, representatives of civil society and young citizens - and resulted in ambitious and measurable political, financial and sporting commitments.

At the political level, the commitments of the Paris Agreement on Sport and Sustainable Development were supported by more than 60 heads of state and government and heads of international organizations, including the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who called on participants to join the Future Summit in September. This agreement, which the Olympic Movement has joined, includes 10 commitments on the five main priorities of the Summit.

FIL President Einars Fogelis said after the summit in Paris: “The FIL fully supports the ten points of the Paris Agreement on Sustainable Sport and will sign the contract in Paris in the coming days”.

As part of the Sport4SD Summit, a first stocktaking of countries' initiatives in the field of sport and sustainable development and their additional commitments was carried out and is available on the dedicated #Sport4SD Summit website.
