IOC Executive Board meets 8 September 2021: Tokyo 2020 debrief and Beijing 2022 report
Lausanne (FIL) Thomas Bach held his first IOC Executive Board meeting since the conclusion of Tokyo 2020. A review of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and a report on the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympic Games topped the agenda of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board's online meeting on 8 September 2021.
The IOC session was an opportunity for the Beijing 2022 team to provide an overview of the organising committee's preparations. This includes numerous test events, test activities and training periods that will take place between October and December, including ten international competitions. These will provide an opportunity to make final tweaks to the venues and facilities ahead of the Games.
Details were also provided on the extensive planning for the COVID 19 counter-measures. On this, President Bach said: "The IOC and Beijing 2022 will apply the same principle as for Tokyo 2020, namely safe Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games." In related news, it was confirmed that the publication of the Beijing 2022 Playbooks, which provide guidelines for all stakeholders, is expected to be completed in October. The guidelines in the Playbooks will build on the lessons learned from the Tokyo 2020 Games and benefit from continued input from global experts and the World Health Organisation.
The XXIV Olympic Winter Games will be held in Beijing and the surrounding area between 4 and 20 February 2022. The Olympic luge events will be held from 5 to 10 February at the Yanqing Sliding Center, 75 kilometres northwest of Beijing's city centre.
