Zwickau (RWH) Germany’s Cathleen Martini, 2011 World Champion in the women’s bobsleigh, made a successful “excursion” in a different sport. Martini, born in Zwickau in the east of Germany, won the 34th International Luge Summer Cup on the plastic track in her home town.
The 31 year-old defeated the current U23 Luge World Champion Aileen Frisch (aged 21) of Altenberg to second place. Martini started her sports career in luge and then became very successful as a bobsleigh pilot. At the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi she finished in seventh position. Additionally, Martini collected four European gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals at World Championships.
Germany’s Chris Eißler, who surprisingly won the Viessmann Luge World Cup event in Winterberg (Germany), earned the podium’s top spot in the men’s singles event.
A total of 142 athletes from five different nations – among them the Ukraine - competed in the traditional Luge Summer Cup.
