PyeongChang (RWH) Winterberg in Germany has beaten its competitors Lake Placid and Sochi in the bid for the 48th World Championships organised by the International Luge Federation (FIL) and has been selected by the 63rd FIL Conference in PyeongChang, Korea, to host the prestigious championships in 2019. Winterberg won in the second round of the election vs. Sochi. Lake Placid failed in the first round. Winterberg hosted the World Championships in 1989 and again in 1991, when the artificial track on the Kappe mountain stood in for Sigulda at the last minute because the political situation in Latvia made a World Championship there out of the question.
